Becoming a Runner…

Hi, my name’s Greg, and I’m turning into “that guy”.  Ya know…a “runner”.

Even just a year ago, that was pretty much unthinkable.

Yes, I had been running for stretches in the past, but that was mostly because it felt like the best way to try and get in shape at the time.  I had added in a few races in that time as additional motivation, a target to aim for instead of just running to lose weight, and that helped me along the way.

Even last year, when I started running again in June, I was doing so to lose weight, but with the goal of completing last year’s Ruckus Race, and then keeping on through several 5k races.

However, somewhere in the process, my mentality changed.  I went from fighting myself to pushing myself to do better.  I saw progress in my speed and comfort with running and wanted to keep that progress going.

Getting the right equipment didn’t hurt either, and I have to thank Fleet Feet for pointing me to the Brooks Men’s Adrenaline GTS 12 Running Shoe with Superfeet Blue Premium Insoles.  I’ve been running pain-free since I put them on.

Now, it’s less of a need to run than a desire to run, and run further than before.  I still want to run some 5k races, and am tackling the Pittsburgh Tough Mudder in August, but the idea of taking on more challenges, like multiple 10k races and half-marathons, is becoming more enticing than scary.

Yes, I still want to lose weight, but I also want to see what I am capable of.  And while I may not be leading the pack, I am still determined to be better than I was the day before.
