It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Jewel hit the airwaves as a 21-year old, providing one of the counter-punches to the grunge movement with “Who Will Save Your Soul”.
The song truly is an amazing combination of catchy music, beautiful and very characteristic singing (it’s hard to miss that distinct voice unless you’re these people), and provocative lyrics. Jewel basically makes what every singer/songwriter who picks up a guitar aspires to seem effortless. Her ability to switch from breathy stanzas to belting out powerful choruses is something very few musicians have the ability to do, making it all the more impressive.
Even today, the song makes me stop and take notice.
