Midweek Music Break: Beastie Boys – Brass Monkey

This is why I keep my music on shuffle…

Amazingly, this song is nearly three decades old.  “Brass Monkey” was the Beastie’s last release before blowing up the airwaves with “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)“, yet it’s great in almost every way that it differs from their signature hit.  While “Fight” is predominantly driven by a catchy hook and the crew takes turns with the lyrics, “Brass Monkey” feeds off a much more irregular beat (that sounds like someone trying to play the saxophone for the first time) and there’s a very impressive flow as they continually finish each other’s sentences without missing a beat.

That was always one of the most impressive things about the Beastie’s…they were three guys who rapped as one.  And it continually evolved, from “Brass Monkey” to “So What Cha Want” to “Intergalactic” and “Body Movin’“.  Always new sounds and experimenting with flow, while managing to have the same underlying Beastie Boys sound is much of what makes them one of the all-time great musical acts.
