I’ll admit, I’m not a huge Lana Del Rey fan. I find most of her music too dreary to listen to more than once, and the one version I do like is the Cedric Gervais remix of Summertime Sadness, which Lana Del Rey fans hate because it’s too upbeat against the melancholy lyrics.
However, when Our Lady Peace posted their Summertime Sadness cover, I was absolutely blown away:
This slower version, I can dig. I think the biggest difference is the emotion with which the lyrics are delivered. Instead of Del Rey’s dispassionate delivery, OLP’s Raine Maida owns the song and adds that inflection that was so desperately needed. The whole delivery is impressive, and really brings the song to life.
And that seems like a fitting note as the summer wraps up and my kids get heading back to school next week…
