It’s easy to forget how good a band Green Day was before hitting full-sellout mode with their American Idiot album.
“Welcome to Paradise”, like most early Green Day works, is a bold, crass, cynical punk song. They were giving the world the middle finger, and making sure you heard about it. And it fit the 90s perfectly.
Alas, they got older and more mature. They put out more polished music, with a message, and it won over the masses. And yet, I hated it. It was the antithesis of their early music, and while I’m often prone to allow for artistic growth, Green Day’s music became overtly political and drove me away.
Thankfully, we’ll always have their great single-name albums (Kerplunk, Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod).
