Fire Dave Wannstedt

As a Pitt alum, I just have to say that current football coach, Dave Wannstedt, who has never done anything but make teams worse, needs to be fired (as others seem to agree).  Since he was hired, I have done my duty to help the team improve by cheering against them in every game, as a loss means one step closer to hiring a real coach.  I will continue this until he is fired.

Oh, and Steve Pederson will be on my bad list too, even though he's only been on the job for a day.  He reportedly wants to give Wannstedt a 3-year extension to ensure that the team will remain uncompetitive into the next decade.

For all the talk about improving Pitt athletics, they sure aren't taking any steps to get it done!

Greg Nilsen's Gravatar Heck no! Even with the win against WVU, they "improved" to 5-7 on the year. Under former coach Walt Harris, I don't think they ever had a season that bad and even won a Big East title (leading to a Fiesta Bowl appearance). Pitt currently has one legitimate player ("Shady" McCoy), and the play of the offensive line and defense have regressed over his 3 years. Don't let the anomaly of Saturday's win deceive you. It is a big rivalry game where players come in with a different mindset. However, the rest of the season they played undisciplined and unmotivated, like their 48-45 loss at home to Navy where they gave up 331 yards rushing, which I got to see in person.

So, yes, I stand behind my "Fire Dave Wannstedt" post.

Dave's Gravatar aaaaaand?

compare Wannstedt's first 3 years and Harris... Harris went 6-6, 2-9, and 5-6...

and Wannstedt? 5-6, 6-6, 5-7

heck, Ron Zook won 1 big ten game in his first two years, now he's taking Illinois to the Rose Bowl.

but go ahead, fire a coach after he's been there for 3 years... especially after the year that UC, UConn, South Florida, and WVU are having.

Greg Nilsen's Gravatar A few more keys here, Dave. Harris started with a worse team. In the 5 years before he took over, Pitt was 3-9. 3-8, 3-8, 2-9, and 4-7. The 5 years before Wannstedt? 7-5, 7-5, 9-4, 8-5, 8-4.

He also brought in better talent than Wannstedt has. Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Bryant, Gerald Hayes, and Darelle Revis were all his guys, along with a number of other current NFL starters.

Building off that 20004 Big East Championship, Pitt's 5th consecutive bowl game appearance, what did Wannstedt do? He even had an incumbent QB in Tyler Palko who was coming off a great year (including a big upset over Notre Dame that year). Basically, he "coached" him into a mediocre player. Heck, the whole program took about 5 steps back when Wannstedt came on board. He never should have been hired in the first place!

And now they're giving him an extension? Talk about being blind to an alumni!
